Hi everyone, I wanted to use the Amsterdam and region travel card to visit Amsterdam and its surroundings.I'd like to know, staying in Hoorn, Do I have to buy return tickets for Purmerend and going out of the train and then use the card from Purmerend to Amsterdam taking another train?or can I stay on board of the same train from Hoorn?

You can take the BUS EBS 314 (or so) for free on this ticket-this busline passes Edam where you can change for Volendam, both very famous and cheesy touristy villages. The bus takes around 1 hr and is thus only 10-15 mins slower as the train. On half of the trip the views are in fact quite nice too-real dutch ´polder´ and some seaviews too.

For train its sadly a little more complicated, due to this chipsystem where you have to check In +OUT. And you canNOT already check in with this ticket in Hoorn-that means you must get out at Purmerend, check out with the single ticket, check in with the ARTT and this means you loose the train and have to wait 30 mins for next. Also you canNOT use the direct nonstop IC this way, unless you buy a much more expensive ticket to Sloterdijk. You could however use any of the multiple direct express buses also from that station (Overwhere) and also from EBS to AMS (central or Noord-metro-ticket also valid on metro which brings you directly in the centre=which is not so much the central station).

Going BACK its more easy as you can simply ´forget´ the check out on ARTT (as its multiday anyway) and check out in Hoorn with the extra single. In principle you could then even use the direct IC, though expect a lot of hassle in some cases when the very few checks happen. You can in fact already check in the single when you also check in in AMS-thus you can even ´help someone´ to enter the gated area, which as such however is against the rules. THis is if you have the machine issued single/returns, which also contain a hidden chip and are only valid when the checkIN has correctly been done. You could order online single/returns too as these do not require the INs+OUTs, but for the starting on the ARTT you MUST have a correct checkIN as this determines its validity and this can only be done in the allowed travel area. This ticket is chip-embedded as the bustrammetro systems can only accept chipped tickets.

Even the service staff from NS seems quite unfamliair with this ticket-some do not even know they sell it, a touristy site like TA=Tripadvisor is much more acqainted with it, though the fine details are also missing for this case.

As @bahnrider points out using the ARTT is quite complicated when you’re staying outside the area for which the ARTT is valid.

I agree that travelling by bus rather than train from Hoorn to Amsterdam is the easier option when it comes to buying an additional ticket. There is however a complication when using bus 314 from Hoorn to Purmerend and beyond. The journey from Hoorn to Purmerend is not covered by the ARTT so you would have to buy a ticket on the bus and then in Purmerend touch in with your ARTT to continue your journey to Amsterdam.

Travelling back by train from Amsterdam Centraal to Hoorn is also quite complicated because you still need an additional ticket to travel from Purmerend to Hoorn. This cannot be solved by buying another ticket from a ticket machine because you need to validate that ticket at a station and you can’t do that when you’re on the train. There is however the option buy a ticket online and store that ticket on your smartphone.

It may help to have a look at a map to see exactly on which routes the ARTT is valid. The map (pdf) can be found here: https://www.iamsterdam.com/media/pdf/visiting-uit/getting-around/artt-map-nz-lijn-2018.pdf?la=en
