Hi. I just realized that I am able to get a refund when the trains are delayed. I travel with a group often and we had several delays in the past and I would like to apply for a refund if I can. I tried doing it through ns.nl, but there wasn't a menu for refund for grouptickets but only smartcards. How do I process the refund for groepsretour tickets?

You need to use a paper 'geld terug bij vertraging'-form. You can obtains these forms by visiting a service desk at the station or by mail via https://webformulier.ns.nl/formulieren

Do mind you need a minimum of 1 hour delay to get any form of refund.

Is there a difference if NS notified the delay beforehand and a sudden delay?

In case of construction work or planned delay, you only get a refund on top of the planned delay. So say there is maintenance, they say you need to suspect 1 hour delay. After that hour, the delay starts to count, so this will mean you need to have 2 hours delay to get a refund with a group ticket.

Sudden delays start to count immediatly.

That is not correct. NS pays back 25% of your ticket when the delay is 30-59 minutes or 50%* when it is >59 minutes.

However, NS only pays if the compensation is no less than €2,30. For groepsretour this means you can only get a '30 minute'-refund if you traveled with 6 people or less.

*You can also get a 100% refund based on European union regulations by contacting customer support instead of using the form. You could also get a compensation when you bought your tickets before NS published planned delays and as a result you decided not to take the journey by train. http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32007R1371&from=NL art 16/a
