to get on a tram or intercity sprinter to go to a train station, is it possible to tap credit card to pay?
looking at the website to buy a ticket, firstly the button to pay for ticket does not bring up payment options. Also, even if I could pay for a ticket, are tickets valid for specified time? It’s very hard to be very accurate with time. It’s only a 15 minute ride for me not very far.

If it's a contactless credit card from Mastercard or Visa (issued by ICS), then yes, you can simply use your card to travel by checking in and out. You can read about it on this page.
In most trams, checking in and out is done inside the tram after you've entered and just before you exit, but in Utrecht you have to do this on the platform before you enter and after you've exited.
