Hello Linda,

Welcome to the NS Serviceforum. If you want to travel in Amsterdam you can take a look at the Amsterdam Travel Ticket or other special discounts, for which you can get more information on this website. If you want to travel to Haarlem then it's convenient to buy a a single-use chipcard or an anonymous OV-chipkaart at an NS ticket machine (with a blue sign and white NS logo on top) or the Tickets & Service counter. For most single-use chipcards you have to pay a surcharge of € 1. For more information about buying tickets you can check this website.

Also I changed the name of your topic, so other users can also find it.

Why would someone buy both a single-use-chipcard and an anonymouse OV-chipkaart? That sounds like a waste of money.

1.WHY do you think you HAVE to go to Ams al 3 days? Haarlem has enough to offer in sights and is far more quiet as currently overwhelmed with tourists Ams.
2. NS does not like tourists very much and makes it as hard as they can to deter them from travel. Hence that answer of Marleen. Also read tripadvisor.com/forum[europe-NL] and read FAQ for transit.
3. Best way to do would be IMHO:
day 1 buy return to AmsCentral-machines take coins only, some bankcards or credit cards (if lucky) with 50 ct extra), join the giant Q of flabbergasted tourists at GVB=local transit, buy 48 or 72 hrs ticket (white/BLue) and use that for local travel. Single tickets cost 2,90 and are valid 1 hr. DO check/in+out every time you board/leave cars. GVB also has buses to Schiphol=airport, their ferries are free anyway.
on day 2-3 buy return only to Sloterdijk=first stop in Ams, use GVB from there. That saves some pennies.
There are all day 6-8 trains Haarlem-Ams and all also call at Sloterdijk, 5 mins before Central.
NOte that those chipcards cost 7,50-NOT refundable and you also need 16 eur MINImum amount on them for train-travel. Remianing balance is near impossible to get back when you leave NL, though you can keep the card for later trips. LOcal bus/tram etc is cheaper when you pay with them-ecxept when you travel such a lot that daytickets are a better buy.
The tourist to afraid to use local transit usually uses those opentop tourist shuttles etc-these are all private and commercial and out of the chipcardpayment anyway. Ditto for the Ams canal boat rides.
Ik heb het even aangepast, Theofiel. Mogelijk een typfout.
