We went to Amsterdam last Sunday (03/04/2022). At the time we decided to go back to Den Haag, where we live, there was no train available neither in Zuid nor in Lelylaan. There was no other option than take a taxi. That cost us 159.25 (IZ TAXI VLUG EN V). This expense was not planned, as you can imagine. Now we would like to have this money back. How we do it because there is no way to ask in Mijn NS. Please advise.

You are legally not entitled to get the taxi money back.

You wanted to start your return trip at a moment that all NS services had already been cancelled and you were advised not to start any new trip. In that case it's up to you to find yourself a solution at your own expense.

NS is only obliged to bring you home at their expense when you were actually travelling by train at the moment that the disruption occurred.

You can however ask NS to reimburse the costs of your trainticket because you were not able to use it.

Good morning robillari and welcome to the NS Community.

While it's true that generally we don't compensate costs for self-arranged alternative transport, Sunday was an exceptional situation. You can find our compensation policy for last Sunday here, which includes a compensation for replacement transport.

As far as I'm aware, this is still true. NS is legally not responsible for follow-up costs as a result of disruptions or delays. The policy that’s been set up is an exception because of an exceptional situation.

That may be true in general but every case is different. In particular, for taxi costs, it depends on what NS offered in the first place. If assistance was not offered, or even refused, then NS may be legally required to reimburse reasonable taxi or hotel costs. But this all depends on the particular case and therefore, an exact answer like Tamzin's is not possible without knowing more details.
