I issued an OV card with a photo for my four-year-old son. I understand that the bus ride is free for him. Today we went for the first time, but I couldn’t make a peak up and a peak out with his card at the entrance and exit. The card machine was giving an error. What am I doing wrong and how do we use the children's travel card?

Kids Vrij is only valid for trains. For other public transport, your son needs balance/credit on the card but will get 34% discount for under 12.
Balance can be loaded at an ov-chipcard machine (station or supermarkets), or ordered online after which it needs to be loaded on the card at any pickup point (some buses have one).
