I am trying to understand the best way to get started when I arrive in Amsterdam. I have created a NS account. It appears that I have to use my credit card when I arrive and then that card can be linked to my account. Then I will be able to get tickets online?

You don’t need an account to get tickets, see https://www.ns.nl/producten/en/losse-kaartjes-toeslagen (VISA, MasterCard and AmEx cards are accepted).
In fact, you don’t need any tickets because you can use your credit card to check in and out and pay as you go. See https://ovpay.nl/en
