The website even says there are no products to be loaded at the ticket machine.

The Mijn NS website never shows any products to be loaded/picked up at a machine. That link/info is totally useless (a relic from the past) 😥
On what time did you check in? You have to check in during off peak hours to get the discount.
I have the exactly the same problem and now I paid way more for my travels than I should have. Full charge + additional useless subscription cost 😡
