I often take the IC from Amersfoort Schothorst, currently. I see that it is changing to the IC Direct soon. I understand there is a surcharge for this train. How and when should it be paid?

I often travel only to Utrecht (now connecting through Amersfoort Centraal), and sometimes to Schiphol. By the website it seems that the surcharge only applies between Schiphol and Rotterdam, so for these routes, no surcharge is needed.

However, if I take the ICDirect all the way to Rotterdam, a surcharge would apply. But how to pay? Am I required to alight in Schiphol to tap the surcharge post, and try to reboard before the train departs? Will there be a way to pay at Schothorst?

The surchage can be loaded on a credit/debit/ov-chipcard by tapping it to the red surcharge pole at the platform. You may cancel the surcharge within 30 minutes by tapping it again, in case you decide to travel to Rotterdam via Utrecht.

These poles are now being placed on all stations on the line (except Lelystad), so one will appear in Amersfoort Schothorst soon.

Alternatively, you can buy an e-ticket here https://www.ns.nl/en/tickets/order/icd-supplement but when you load it on the platform outside peak hours, you get 40% off (€ 1,74 for 2024, € 1,80 in 2025).

It's already there, just needs some stickers as they are recycling old poles for these supplement posts.

To add to the above: someone already sent me a photo and actually the pole at Schothorst already has the correct sticker…
