Do I have to pay for my NS Weekend Vrij subscription even if I don’t use it for the whole month (December)? I am currently outside of the Netherlands, so I haven’t used and won’t be using it at all in December. But I have received invoice to pay for the subscription for the month of December.

That's correct. Usually subscription costs are automatically deducted from your bank account. If you change your subscription to Flex Basis you'll receive an intermediate invoice within a couple of days with the refund. The bank transfer will follow soon.

NS subscriptions are always continuous, so you need to cancel it yourself if you're not using it.
You can change your subscription to Flex Basis. This means no subscription costs and of course no discount. You can do this yourself in Mijn NS. The change is immediate. Subscription costs are always calculated on a per-day basis, so you'll get a refund for the unused period of Weekend Vrij.
When you're back in the Netherlands, you can change it to Weekend Vrij (or any other subscription) again if you want.
