Auto debit

I am not sure how the automatic debit works for my personalised OV chipkaart. I loaded some balance onto it, but it is never getting deducted no matter how much I travel. At the end of the month I was sent an invoice stating that a certain amount was due and it would be directly debited from my bank. I don't understand how this works and can't remember an auto-debit option being set. Furthermore, is the entire amount I loaded onto my card wasted now that money from my account is being deducted?

When you buy an NS Flex subscription, you have to pay the subscription costs for the first month when you order. The subscription costs for the later months, and the travel costs incurred, will be automatically deducted from the bank account you used in the ordering process to pay for the first month. You agreed to this when you ordered the subscription (you can’t order if you don’t).

You can have the amount on the card paid out to you at a service desk.
