forgot to check in

I had to quickly transfer to the train to Eindhoven from Amstel station. I got down from the metro and had to transfer to the train in the same platform just across. In the hurry i honestly forgot to checkout of the metro and check in for the train. Soon after one of the NS conductors checked my card and i told them what happened and she was understanding that its an honest mistake. She said talk to klantenservice. And later close to reaching eindhoven another NS conductor was checking and I explained to him that i forgot to check in in the hurry and another colleague is aware of this. He was extremely rude and said its very easy to say you didn’t have time and said he has fined me for 50 euros that will be charged in my invoice. But i have weekend vrij subscription and this happened today(Sat night) so technically I am paying monthly for this subscription and have free travel in the weekend. Is there a way to avoid this “fine” as it was a genuine oversight. Thanks for your inputs!

You do always have to check in, with a Weekendvrijsubscription as well. Both reactions of the train conductors are understandable. But do not worry, you will not be charged with a fine, there is just some hassle.

It is hard to check what your intention was. A trainconductor checks your behavior You need a valid card, ant it is only valid with a checkin. You dit not have it. The train conductor may be rude from your port of view, but the decision was right. You need to travel with a valid checkin, not with stories or excuses.

The fine will be canceled bij customer service, but prevent this. Not checking in is a common problem with a subscription of WeekendVrij and train conductors ar getting tired always hearing the same story that you told. It is a matter of attitude, it is easy to prevent this fine, just respect  the law. You are not allowed to travel without a checkin, but you dit not consider a later train with a checkin probably.

Just do not forget to check in. You agreed in your contract with NS to always do this. Most fellow passengers do not like these discussions. The trainconductors are trained to handle aggression, and will not get rude right away.

Your fine will  be solved with Customer Service though.

Probably at this point in time the understanding train conductor had registered the missing NS check-in, starting the automatic EUR 50,00 penalty procedure, and had NOT informed the traveller.

Why else would the conductor tell the traveller to talk to klantenservice?

In my opinion as NS customer, on a free travel day the EUR 50,00 penalty should be much less, say EUR 1,00, but not zero, since travel registration is necessary to distribute the subscription proceeds between transport operators, and to determine the subscription price.

No, it's very easy, because TS has already paid for his subscription. Therefore, there can be no intention to dodge fares. A mistake is the only remaining option.
